DECEMBER 13, will for long be remembered in Kenya. The invites were clear; P.S. Come masked. So, with Halloween-like masks, all traffic headed for Makindu Road, in Kilimani, an up-scale suburb of Nairobi, the home of Sylvia Owori’s fashion store.

By 7:00pm, guests were strolling in. Among them, leading media personalities, business men; in fact the who-is-who of Nairobi.

The guest were ushered into a huge tent in the vast compound of Owori‘s store where eats and drinks started flowing until the following morning.

Meanwhile, the DJ and a magician who did all kinds of tricks kept the guest entertained until the eagerly awaited grand show began.

The models displayed five types of collections, each with 21 pieces and during intervals, Kenya’s artist Wahu with two dancing queens, kept guests’ eyes fixed on the stage.

The first theme was a black and white collection representing elegance and timeless blueprints, a mixture of trendy wear that will be up for sale next season and a feature of the 60s looks.

Next was evening, cocktail wear, while the last category featured organic cotton and paper beads attire.

Finally, Owori joined all the models on the catwalk before she made a speech. She said after being inspired by US president elect, Barack Obama, her dream now is to become the worlds leading designer. She also announced the launch of Kenya African women magazine early next year in Nairobi.

The partying and dancing went on till the wee hours of Sunday morning, when the booze began to claim its victims one by one, with the greatest number of casualties being journalist and models.

“Ugandans can be so generous. Hah, this Owori woman!” A photographer was heard swearing.
