The Archbishop Emeritus of Kampala, Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala has praised the late Fr. Ireneus Kasibante for his contribution to the development of the church through education.

He said as the education secretary of the archdiocese, Kasibante laid a firm foundation for Catholic-founded education institutions and also guided many teachers and managers.

Wamala also praised Kasibante for his negotiation skills. He said Kasibante enabled the Church and the ministry of education to reach a compromise when the ministry wanted to close some of the Catholic-founded primary teachers’ colleges.

“Fr. Kasibante knew the crucial role that schools can play in the evangelistic mission of the Church. He was also a prudent professional, who knew how to get what he wanted without losing his principles,” Wamala said.

The Cardinal was speaking at Kasibante’s burial at Jinja-Karoli Catholic Church in Wakiso district on Saturday.

Kasibante, 68, died in his bathroom at the presbytery of Jinja-Karooli Church on Friday from a heart attack.

He was also praised by the chancellor of the archdiocese, Fr. Joseph Kazibwe Ntuwa, who referred to him as a visionary education manager.

He said Kasibante wrote books and contributed to many local and international educational journals.

The LCI chairman of the area, Hajji Jaberi Musoke, said Kasibante was an extra-ordinary cleric, who had united people of different religious and ethnic affiliations in the area.

The requiem Mass was led by the Auxiliary Bishop of Kampala, Christopher Kakooza.

He was assisted by Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa of Masaka diocese, Bishop Mathias Ssekamaanya of Lugazi and Bishop Edward Baharagate.

Wakiso district chairman Ian Kyeyune, woman MP Rose Ssenninde and East African legislator Margaret Zziwa also attended the burial.
