BRIG. Ali Fadhul was one of Idi Amin’s trusted army officers.

He was the commanding officer of the Simba Batallion in Mbarara which Amin renamed Simba Mechanised Regiment when Tanzania raided Uganda in 1972.

Fadhul rose through the ranks to become a minister for provincial administration, the equivalent of the current Minister of Local Government.

He also served as governor in the northern and the western provinces.

The western province comprised the then Ankole and Tooro districts, while the northern province comprised of Acholi and Lango districts.

Fadhul was accused of killing a local chief who helped Museveni flee the country to Tanzania after Amin’s 1971 coup.

He was charged and convicted for murder in the late 1980s. The Supreme Court turned down his appeal against conviction and death sentence in 1993.
