CHURCHES and charity organisations operating orphanages must register with the gender ministry or risk being closed, the minister for youth and children affairs, James Kinobe, has said.

Kinobe warned organisations and individuals who disguised as helpers yet they used the children for their personal benefit.

“The Children’s Act requires anyone who wants to operate an orphanage to seek certification from the minister for children. Unfortunately 90% of orphanages in the country are not certified,” he said.

Kinobe added that many unregistered charity organisations were abusing the rights of children.

“We want these organisations to register so that we can monitor their activities,” he said.

Kinobe was speaking at St. Mbugga Gospel Messengers Church in Lusaka, Makindye division, last Sunday.

He was officiating at a party to welcome 30 teenage orphans, who had been performing in the US.

Kinobe added that organisations which use children to solicit money from abroad, should spend the money only on projects that benefit the children.

Reverend Moses Ssemanda said the church runs St. Mbugga Primary and Secondary schools and looks after more than 500 orphans.
