TANZANIA, Rwanda and Burundi have signed a deal to develop a multinational railway network linking the three neighbouring countries.

The deal was sealed during a consultative forum on transport, communications and meteorology recently.

It commits the three states towards supporting the development and implementation of a common railway network between Isaka and Keza in Tanzania to Kigali in Rwanda and Musongati in Burundi through Gitega.

The signatories included the Rwanda infrastructure minister, Linda Bihire,Tanzania’s minister for infrastructure development, Dr. Shukuru Kawambwa and Burundi minister for transport, posts and telecommunications, Philippe Njoni.

A statement issued by the East African Community headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania said the three governments were to collectively deal with development of the new regional network and its link to the central corridor railway network to the Port of Dar-es-Salaam.
Partner states are expected to facilitate the creation of the right of way for the railway line within their territories, initiate and facilitate technical studies, including mobilisation of funding.
