PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has urged the youth to intermarry, saying it was a good way of assimilating people from other ethnicities, reports Cyprian Musoke.

Addressing the congregation that turned up for the wedding of Patrick Karamagi and Marion Musinguzi at Our Lady of Africa Church Mbuya on Saturday, Museveni praised Karamagi, a Munyoro, for “seeking out” Marion, a Mukiga.

“They have confirmed what I said when I went for a rally at Kagadi during elections. There was tension between the indigenous Banyoro and Bakiga and I found them quarrelling. I asked the Banyoro whether they were “really Banyoro,” and they said they were,” Museveni narrated. Museveni said he happens to come from one of the oldest clans, the Basiita, who assimilated the Bachwezi when they settled in their area.

“What did the Banyoro do to the Luo? They assimilated them and even borrowed some of their names like Amooti. Karamagi has shown how to assimilate other tribes,” he said.

The bridegroom, Patrick, is the son of Brig. Matayo Kyaligonza Uganda’s Ambassador designate to Burundi, while the bride, Marion, is the daughter of Jotham Musinguzi, the director of the Population Secretariat.

Museveni commended Kyaligonza and Musinguzi for their contribution to the liberation struggle. He donated friesian cows to the couple.
