Mbarara municipal council has halted the construction of masts by Orange Telecom, a new telephone company. The municipality mayor, Wilson Tumwine, said the company was building masts in the municipality without the council’s approval.

Addressing the district executive committee on Friday, Tumwine urged all investors to follow the district rules and procedures.

He said the ban would last until the council approves areas for the masts. Edrisa Mbabali, the councillor for Nyamityobora ward, said Orange Telecom’s actions were a sign of disrespect.

He said some of the masts were on a road reserve. The municipality works chairperson, Asiimwe Ntengye, ordered the law enforcement officers to ensure that the company complies with the ban.

Meanwhile, the town is to get a bypass to divert heavy commercial vehicles from the central business district. Tumwine said the road would be built by the works ministry. He said the road would start from the Coca Cola plant on the Masaka Road, pass through Rwebishuri, Nkokonjeru and join Kabale Road at Katatumba Resort.
