EDITOR—We pray for and with the Bishop-elect of Namirembe Diocese, Canon Wilberforce Kityo-Luwalira, who will be consecrated in May to replace the Rt. Rev. Samwiri Balagadde Ssekkadde, who has been Bishop of the diocese for 16 years.

I know Kityo-Luwalira as a reserved and an unassuming man, and it is upon him that the mantle of pastoral oversight of Namirembe Diocese has been laid. The main role of a bishop is to preach the Gospel, teach scripture, administer the sacraments, and give pastoral support to the clergy.

It is good if he is also a good administrator, but administration should not take up too much of a bishop’s time. It is good if he is developmental, but this is not what the bishop is called for. Others in the diocese can do the administration and promote development.

The bishop is supposed to be an enabler, one who discerns the gifts of others, especially the clergy, and fosters their growth or use. He will be reminded that the ministry requires colllective activity.

I pray that my brother in the Lord will nurture talent and use other servants’ gifts. For there are many gifts in Namirembe Diocese, especially among the clergy that need freeing. And I trust that despite the many problems in the diocese, Kityo-Luwalira has a lot of goodwill from people who want to see development.
