Winnie Nantumbwe, 21, was crowned Miss Makerere last week at Katikati restaurant after beating 10 contestants. She won a new car, a one week trip to Kenya and tuition for a year. Nantumbwe is a second year student of Economics and is aspiring to become a minister of Finance. Born to the late Herman Male and Immaculate Nanyonga a nursing sister in Mukono, Nantumbwe is the second born out of four children. She talked to Miles Rwamiti about her life

Who is Winnie Nantumbwe?
I’m a student of Bachelor of Arts in Economics (B’Econ) in my second year. I live with my mother, who is a nursing sister in Mukono. I am friendly yet reserved. I went to Mukono Boarding Primary School and St. Joseph’s Nagalama before joining the Ivory tower –– Makerere University.

How does it feel to be crowned the most beautiful girl in Makerere?
Oh my God, very special. Everywhere I go, people recognise me and now my friends want to move with me more often, which was not the case before. I am so honoured. However, the funny thing is, I have not got the car.

So, what happened to the car?
I also don’t know. Apparently I was supposed to get the car the night I was crowned but I was shocked to be told it was not present. When I contacted the organisers I was told to wait until the next day since it was too late to discuss such issues. I have waited until to date (Tuesday)!

Why did you contest?
I thought I had the ability to become the next queen and since I am a model, I was confident I could go to the next level.

How were your parents like, when you took part in this contest?
My mother did not like the idea because she had a feeling that I was going to be used by men to win the contest. She later understood and supported me during the pageant.

So, are you the most beautiful girl in Makerere University?
Yeah, beauty with a purpose. I think you can testify, aren’t I pretty to you?

What changes are you bringing to Makerere University?
First of all I want to restore the academic glory which Makerere seems to have been lost long time with the help of the guild office. A lot was said about Miss Makerere but I want also to use my office put things in order.

How ready are for the media?
I need to be more careful about how I conduct myself in public. I don’t care if someone comes up with funny stories as long as I know they are lies. However, if something written is the truth then it is fine.

Will being Miss Makerere change your lifestyle?
Yes, I have to be careful about where I hang out; I will have to do away with some of these places I have been going to.

Are you in Love?
No.

What do you mean?
I don’t have a boyfriend.

So are you searching?
No and I am comfortable.

Do you believe in love?
Yes I do! It feels so good to know that someone loves you, talks to you, and makes you smile.

Who is your ideal man?
Someone who can make me happy, smile and also support me in whatever I do.

When was the last time you did something for the first time?
Eeh! That’s difficult, but I think being crowned Miss Makerere beats them all. When my name was announced, I cried and I almost collapsed.

What would you do if your boss slapped you?
Look into her eyes for a second then walk away. I may not slap her back but would think of getting another job immediately.

Plans…..
Since I am a student of economics, I would like to be a minister of finance and also set up my own modeling agency and a fashion house.
