THE Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has threatened to block the forthcoming local council byelections slated for May, citing irregularities in the Electoral Commission (EC).

Speaking at the party’s weekly press briefing yesterday, FDC spokesperson Wafula Oguttu said the EC gave contradictory figures in the number of vacancies. “We shall file an injunction to stop this election. We are finalising our application and affidavits,” Oguttu said.

He said supporters had petitioned FDC’s electoral commission, complaining about anomalies in the process. He said the party’s legal department was compiling information that would be included in the affidavits to be filed as evidence.

Oguttu noted that on March 4, the EC said there were 1,161 vacant posts in 78 districts. On March 12 during a stakeholders meeting, the figure was put at 1,468 posts in 79 districts.

He said after the stakeholders meeting, all parties were given discs, with information giving 1,150 positions which were vacant. However after complaints the EC gave another figure of 1,507.

Oguttu said the EC was misleading the public by declaring some posts vacant, yet they were filled.

He cited Nankoma sub-county in Bugiri district, where the post of Persons with Disabilities is already occupied by, Dan Matovu.

FDC electoral chief Dan Mugarura said: “They are doing this to fail us. This is an ultimate goal to weaken FDC and other opposition parties, but we shall not give up.”
