THERE was commotion on during the Bugembe town council NRM primary elections on Wednesday as residents prevented non-committee members from voting.

Members of the NRM convened to elect the flagbearers who would contest for various posts in the town council.

Some village councils sent members who are not on their committees to vote. But when they were dismissed from the polling station, they insisted that they had the right to vote.

More chaos erupted when it was discovered that two different voters registers were being used.

The elections were overseen by Haruna Ntuuyo, the former chairperson of Budondo sub-county and Bagoole Kirimwiita, the former deputy mayor of Jinja municipal council.

Sam Diogo, a resident of Budumbuli East whose name was in the register, was barred from casting his vote after other members said he did not hold any post in a committee.

Others, including Mary Lyazi, Monica Nalongo, Samali Nakiranda and Ruth Omondi, all from Budumbuli West, were initially barred from voting because of the register mix-up.

The Budumbuli West chairperson, Hamuza Wambuzi, was called in to identify members of different committees, but it was later agreed that all the members were allowed to vote.

Local administration policemen were deployed to calm the situation.

Frank Kayemba was elected as flagbearer for the LC3 chairperson of Bugembe Town Council after defeating Hajji Sula Sssentongo.

Others who were elected were Hamuza Wambuzi (Budumbuli West parish), Kassim Ntambi (Nakanyonyi-Katwe parish) and Majid Kawanguzi (Katende Ward).

Mary Munwankyo was elected Budumbuli East Woman councillor.

In Mafubira sub-county, Charles Kimonyo beat Badru Magembe to contest for the seat of the chairperson.

Nomination for candidates for the byelections starts today and will continue tomorrow.
