Residents of Abukamola parish in Omoro sub-county in Lira district have urged the Government to complete the construction of Okokolako Vocational School and take over its management.

Abukamola LC3 chairman Francis Omaramoi said the school would absorb hundreds of youth who dropped out of primary and secondary school.

Omaramoi was briefing MPs Benson Obua Ogwal (Moroto county) and Denis Hamson Obua (Youth Northern) on the state of education and other problems the former IDPs are faced with.

He said the institution was built by Food for the Hungry, an international charity organisation, but did not start operations due to the insecurity caused by Joseph Kony’s LRA rebels, which forced the residents into camps.

Alfred Apita, the school’s construction committee chairperson, said the charity pulled out of the project at the peak of the insurgency in 2003. Omaramoi said 80% of the youth were denied the opportunity to study during the insurgency.

“The youth are redundant and that is not good,” Omaramoi noted.

He said the school should be one of the beneficiaries of the Peace, Recovery and Development Plan.

Apita said over sh20m had been used to build classrooms. “We are stuck. We have no other source of revenue to kick-start the school,” Apita stated.
