THE Government has allocated sh4b for the rehabilitation of the rice growing scheme in Butaleja district.

The funds will be used to dig dams, which will store water to irrigate the scheme during the dry seasons.

The agriculture state minister, Aggrey Bagiire, made the disclosure recently while visiting the project in the district.

He said the funds would also be used to rehabilitate the irrigation channels that supply individual farmers with water.

His remarks follow a petition by farmers who complained of lack of water, especially in the dry season.

They also expressed concern that the scheme was not well managed.

The minister said the Government was committed to boosting the agricultural sector.

“The scheme will provide employment and will be a source of foreign exchange when rice is sold to neighbouring countries like Sudan and Kenya,” he said.

Present were Richard Waya, the LC5 chairperson, and James Oluka, the chief administrative officer.
