GRAPHIC Systems, a large format printing firm, acquired modern digital printing equipment recently. Rajesh Chaplot, the general manager, talked to Kiganda Ssonko about the innovation.

Tell us about Graphic Systems and what it does.

Graphic Systems was established in 1997.
Over time, the firm has attained experience that brings each domestic unit to the forefront of its respective market.
Our aim is to serve from the largest multinational company to the smallest local firm as a one-stop shop.

The firm does large-format digital printing like making of billboards, banners, tyre covers, pop-up stands, ABS signages and metal fabrication of signage. We also do off-set printing labels and cartoons.
Graphic Systems has managed to offer most of the local requirements for industrial labelling and packaging that were sourced from Kenya, South Africa and Europe in the 1990s.

What are you doing to cope with the market trends.

Every year, we bring new technology to offer something new to the market.
Recently, we bought a machine which prints on both sides of back-lit signage. This gives the same colour effect during day and at night.
We have also added machines that make modern textile printing (tear-drop flag) for advertising and promotions. Such printing had been sourced from South Africa and other countries, but we can offer it here. We procured these machines at a cost of sh1.6b to enhance quality.

Last month, we brought a specialised software called ‘Smiley’, which will bring a revolution in the digital printing industry.
This is a creative software, which is flexible in designing and personalised printing.
It’s very useful for telecom companies. This software helps us generate additional sales and gives options to our customers.
In the last few months we have invested in various automated binding machines to increase efficiency, reduce our turn-around time and improve quality.

We have invested in Muller Martini perfect binding machines, gang stitchers and Bobs folder gluer. We have also acquired a high-speed printer, the CD 74, a new generation printing machine that will connect directly to pre-press. It is the first of its kind in the country.

The global credit crunch continues to hit many businesses, how are you standing the challenge?

The global crisis has affected everyone and Graphic Systems is no exception. But we shall withstand it with determination and new strategies.
When business is growing you need advertising. When it is not growing like in this crisis, you need more advertising to keep in business, maintain your market share and be prepared to move on after the recession. With or without the financial crisis, advertising is the life-line of any business. This is why we have to persevere as a major player in the advertising sector.

Do you have any expansion plans?

We plan to expand regionally after the economic crisis. That is, most probably, within a year.
However, our products are already in Rwanda, DR Congo and Angola.

Our expansion is in line with regional integration at government level and the growing demand from these countries.
