THE Uganda Red Cross Society has given relief items to 435 people in Bukonde sub-county, Mbale district whose houses and plantations were destroyed by hailstorms, reports Paul Watala.

The society’s programme officer for Mbale, Kevin Nabutuwa, on Monday handed over the items which included jerrycans, plates, cups, soap, blankets, saucepans and tarpaulins.

Nabutuwa said the beneficiaries were picked from 10 villages in the sub-county.

She said they planned to appeal to the disaster preparedness ministry for help.

“There is possibility of a famine outbreak in the coming three months because all the crops were destroyed by the storm,” she said.
