Residents of Kaberamaido have been urged to stop selling their land. The resident district commissioner, John Eresu, said it was unfortunate that people were selling land to get money for drinking.

“Even the internally displaced persons who come to reclaim their land want to sell it and get money for drinking,” he said.

Eresu was recently speaking at a meeting chaired by youth state minister Jessica Alupo at the NRM offices in Kaberamaido town.

The meeting aimed at encouraging NRM candidates for the coming LC byelections.

Eresu said after selling the land, many people say they would invest the money, but end up buying alcohol and other things that cannot help them to develop.

He added that residents shunned hard work and wanted easy money.

Eresu said the rate at which people sold land caused many evictions and the most affected were widows and orphans.

He advised the residents to use clan leaders to solve land matters. Eresu warned politicians against interfering in land cases.

“Land conflicts should not be politicised,” he said. Alupo appealed to party members in the district to help each other.

“We have limited resources, but let us help one another other than lament that the party is not supportive,” she said.
