ALTHOUGH it cannot compare to the London and Rio de Janeiro carnivals, Orange Uganda and, indeed, Uganda’s first street carnival, last Saturday, was every bit as exciting. Thousands of people stood along the streets of Kampala to watch the carnival dancers and other activities that were staged on wide trucks.

Unaware of what was happening; some of them first shouted Sematimba’s name, thinking he was celebrating his victory. They were later corrected by the emcee who endeavoured to explain one or two things about the carnival.

The Orange Street Karnival began at the Uganda Manufacturers Association showgrounds at Lugogo at 9:00am. They went through Nakawa to Ntinda, Kamwokya, Mulago, Wandegeya, Nakulabye, Bakuli, Kabakanjagala, Lubiri, Kibuye, Katwe, Clock Tower, Jinja Road and reached the Lugogo Cricket Oval at 4:00pm for the carnival after-party.

Led by over 30 Kampala bikers and a fleet of cars, the convoy consisted of six wide trucks full of dancers, heavy lifters, the Police Band and the Africa Traditional Band.

Each group was good, but the dancers rocked harder. They wore revealing costumes which corresponded well with their dancing strokes.

Katwe, Wandegeya and Clock Tower, were the places with the most excited crowd. Supermarket attendants; waitresses and nurses could not remain at their work; they rushed out to stare!
At Lubiri, the convoy was intercepted by Salim Uhuru, who served lunch to the tired, but excited crowd.

The carnival was part of the celebrations to launch the operations of Orange Telecom in Uganda, which started last Thursday at the Silk Lounge and Oygen with a pre-party carnival.
