AFRI-TENDO may not hold high popularity across the local Gospel music scene. But on the international scene, the Ugandan ensemble is not only famous, but also held in high esteem.
Afri-Tendo is an outreach musical arm of Thrust Ministries International, which was founded by Mike Wangolo, a US-based Ugandan evangelist, in 1986.
The dynamic gospel team impacts churches, prisons and communities across the world with their powerful ministry.
Using traditional African harmonies and movements, their heartfelt performances bring a refreshing and inspirational atmosphere everywhere they go.
The group has energetic dancers and musicians, who sing praise and worship songs in various African languages.
The group also performs traditional dances from all over Uganda. They have also adopted traditional gigs from countries like Zambia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa and Congo, where they have travelled.
The group is famous in the American state of Colorado, where they performed many concerts.
Recently, the group caught the eye of the American President Barrack Obama, who requested them to perform for him, during his campaign tour of the state of Iowa.
Wangolo is optimistic about the future: “We shall continue to make local and global impact. We sing in various languages like Zulu, Swahili, Luganda and English. This gives us a globally wider fan-base.â€
The group has three albums to their name.
