A 66-year-old blind man, Peter Lomon, recently exchanged vows with Maria Meri at St. Kizito Catholic Church, Naoi parish in Moroto diocese. Lomon, a resident of Katamukono village, said faithfulness among married couples was necessary in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

He encouraged other Karimojong to marry and be faithful to their spouses to eliminate sexually transmitted diseases from the sub-region.

Three other couples were wedded at the colourful ceremony, the first of its kind in Karamoja. It was attended by about 2,000 people from Moroto and other districts in the sub-region.

The Rev. Fr. Paul Ngole said weddings strengthened and purified marriages in addition to helping in the fight against HIV/AIDS and moral decadence.

“Weddings should not be about cows, riches or shining clothes, they should be about love, hope and trust. It is good that the Karimojong have started going into holy marriages because Karamoja needs stable families to survive,” Ngole said.

This was the 55th wedding to be held in the church which was built in 1970. The last wedding had been held in 1994 and it involved one couple.

Naoi parish council secretary Tom Lokwang expressed happiness that the Karimojong have started appreciating the Christian sacrament of holy matrimony.

“More so, the wedded couples are not learned people, but ordinary villagers who are driven by love and their faith in Jesus Christ,” he said.
