EDITOR—I am not an FDC activist nor a politician. However, the death of Tom Jjulunga touched me as it did to all peace-loving Ugandans. On June 11, The New Vision published some details about how Jjulunga died.

Is it true that when he was dumped at Rubaga Hospital, the cashier and the guard, instead of helping him threw him out because they did not know who would pay his medical bill? If it is, it is pathetic and absurd.

The management of Rubaga should take responsibility for their staff’s behaviour. Maybe Jjulunga would have survived if he had received immediate attention! This could be the tip of an iceberg and people die at Rubaga because they cannot be treated if they have no money.

Many pregnant women and children could be among those being denied medical attention. I am aware Rubaga is a private hospital and doing business.

But I am also equally aware that it provides humanitarian services and is faith-based. Rubaga staff should learn from what Jesus preached and did for the poor. The Ministry of Health should investigate the hospital’s activities and services and establish whether they operate within the professional code of conduct.
