HEALTH Centre IVs in Tororo district cannot handle emergency cases requiring surgery and blood transfusion because they lack fridges for preserving blood.

Patients, especially mothers who develop complications during delivery, have died while being taken to Tororo Hospital, the director of health services, Dr. David Okumu, disclosed on Monday.

Okumu was addressing women MPs during a workshop on reproductive health at Rock Hotel in Tororo.

He noted that the district had informed the line ministry, but no action had been made.

Okumu also stated that the negative attitude of men towards family planning makes it difficult for health workers to provide reproductive health services.

He cited an incident where 29 of the 30 women who had registered for family planning services withdrew because some of them had been beaten by their husbands.

Meanwhile, the officer in charge of Mulanda Health Centre, Dr. Tom Ochan, said they could not conduct surgery because they did not have an anaesthetist and theatre assistants.

The workshop, organised by the National Association of Women MPs and funded by the United Nations Development Programme, aimed at assessing the impact of service delivery to the community. It attracted participants from the health sector, civil society organisations and political leaders.
