LOCAL council chairpersons have been urged to account for the funds the Government releases through the Local Government Service Delivery Programme.

The Kawempe Division LC3 chairperson, Nasser Takuba, said 30% of the funds meant for the parishes will be handled by LC1 and LC2 chairpersons as opposed to funds being channeled to the division.

“Under the programme 30% of the funds were managed by the division. Now that the money is given directly to the parishes, you should account for the funds,” Takuba told the leaders during the training at Tick Hotel in Kawempe, a Kampala suburb.

The training, organised by FIDA, an NGO, is meant to enhance the LCs capacity in handling marriage and property inheritance disputes.

Takuba also advised the LCs to understand the law before resolving disputes in the LC courts.

Harriet Ityang from the justice ministry advised the LCs to acquaint themselves with marriage and inheritance laws.

Anne Naiga, the Kyebando LCI chairperson, commended FIDA for training local leaders on the rights of women and children, which has helped reduce domestic violence in her area.
