THE Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, has supported the establishment of a youth vigilantee group in Masaka district to work with the Police to deal with insecurity.

Speaking during a tour of the district on Saturday, Kayihura commended the residents of Kaswa in Kingo sub-county, saying the initiative was an act of bravery.

“I came here to bless the group and assure you that we shall work together,” he stated. The districts of Masaka, Sembabule, Rakai, Lyantonde and Kalangala have experienced insecurity over the last month following a wave of murders.

This prompted speculation that a rebel group had emerged in the region. The Government, however, dismissed the claims.

Kayihura asked the district Police chief, Fred Ayebare, to form a Police post at Kaswa.

He said the vigilantees were an example of community policing, which the force was placing emphasis on.

He noted that without cooperation between the Police and the people, it would be hard to maintain security.

“I will give you sh500,000 for mobilisation. We need such groups, not only in Masaka, but countrywide,” Kayihura said.

He noted that the security situation was improving and urged security agencies not to relax, but to intensify efforts to arrest criminals.

Ayebare advised the residents to be alert. “You should watch over your neighbours,” Banyagi said. Meanwhile, the assistant Inspector General of Police, Asan Kasingye, told journalists in Masaka that he was pitching camp in the area to monitor an operation, code-named “Mawaji”, aimed at arresting criminals.

He noted that 93 murder cases had been registered in area. Kasingye, who is to be deputised by the deputy director of crime intelligence, David Magara, said the results of the effort would be felt soon.
