EDITOR—I have read Minister Jessica Alupo’s article with mixed feelings. It is true many positive things have happened to the youth since 1986. However, the practice of dating every positive thing in this country from 1986 is not accurate or even healthy.

Is it not true that Ruhakana Rugunda, Tumusiime Mutebile and many others in leadership today are products of the vibrant youth movement of the 1960s? The minister very ably outlines the legislative achievements of the NRM in relation to the youth in the period it has been in power. To me, the failure of this government in relation to the youth is not legislative but moral.

The future of a nation is guaranteed much more by moral example than by simply letting the youth participate in the politics of the nation, however important that might be. The flourishing corruption in the country is not an example to nurture the youth. It cannot teach honest enterprise and the attendant benefits.

In the last two weeks alone, The New Vision has published stories of huge amounts of money disappearing into thin air. Is theft an example to emulate? Certainly not!
