Breastfeeding is the most natural thing after delivery, yet most mothers prefer to do it discreetly, away from the prying eyes of the public. HARRIET BIRUNGI sought tips from mothers on how to breastfeed discreetly in public.

Rose Baryomunsi, a mother of three, says: “Every time I went out with my children, I would carry two sheets to cover mine and the baby’s heads.” And once the baby latched onto the breast, she would make faces to keep him feeding.

Rachael Nalubega, a mother of two, says having seen how people stared at her sisters when they were breastfeeding, she chose not to take the same route. Away from home, she would use a cannon sheet, which she knotted over her shoulder. “I ensured enough space for the baby to throw a leg and for eye contact,” she says.

However, Sylvia Mwebaze, whose last born is 11 years old, says when breastfeeding, you need to find a place where there are no males.

Fredrick Kazungu, a health worker with Family Clinic and Maternity Centre, Kyengera, says mothers should not be ashamed to breastfeed at the expense of privacy. He added that, if you are particular about people seeing your breast, then wear something that is free enough to allow the baby to access the breast. The blouse should have enough room so that once you un-tuck it, the baby can get to the breast from below.

Wardrobe for a breastfeeding mother
Baryomunsi says any breastfeeding mother, who wants to be discreet, should invest in bras with a fastening clip at the front. These can be opened with ease.

Also, their wardrobe should consist of dresses and blouses with buttons at the front. When teamed with nursing bras, breastfeeding is made easier. You can also get wrapper blouses with a V-neckline so that the inner layer covers the baby when feeding. Depending on where you go, Eagen Mansions, Cham Towers, Pioneer Mall, among other arcades, you may spend sh50,000 on such a blouse.

Alternatively, you can tailor your own clothes. Buy natural fabrics and insist on having buttons at the front of the blouse.
