FORT Portal municipality in Kabarole district loses sh1.2m in tax collection from the banana traders every month according to mayor Asaba Edison Ruyonga.

FORT Portal municipality in Kabarole district loses sh1.2m in tax collection from the banana traders every month.

The revelation was made when Asaba Edison Ruyonga, the mayor of the municipality, met the Kabundaire market traders at Boma on Thursday.

The traders had been on strike protesting the increase of market dues from sh300 to sh500 per bicycle of bananas. They said the 235 traders who operated at Kabundaire and Kisenyi stages paid dues worth sh1.6m per month.

The mayor was shocked by the revelation because the council receives of sh400,000 only from 30 traders.
Asaba promised to investigate the matter and apprehend the people involved in the scam.

The strike by the traders had hiked the prices of bananas in town and residents had vowed to join the traders in a strike.
