THE Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has started mandatory registration of all makers of bottled water and juice. Meeting the manufacturers at Hotel Africana in Kampala, the standards body announced the introduction of a safety mark (S-mark) to appear on all products that meet minimum safety requirements.

Moses Sebunya, the UNBS principal public relations officer, said the registration exercise was prompted by the increased number of manufacturers of these drinks.

“We want to have uniform standards as we move towards the East African common market.” He said the firms would be inspected to ensure they meet health and sanitation requirements and their staff was medically fit to handle food.

“Samples will be picked for regular testing and should they meet the standards consistently, the manufacturer will then be allowed to use the S-mark,” he said. Trading licence, use of water from the National Water and Sewerage Corporation or boiled water are some of the other requirements.
