KAMPALA and its suburbs has suffered an intermittent water supply in the last two weeks. Ndejje, Ntinda, Mutungo, Kanyanya, Nabweru and Busabala have only been getting water at night.

Other suburbs with water shortages are Namuwongo, Namungoona and Rubaga.

A technical supervisor from the National Water and Sewerage Corporation said the ongoing drought had affected the pumping of water from the Ggaba plant.

He explained that “as the water reduces, so does the pressure in the pumps, making them fail to push water to all the destinations.”

There is more dirt at the source of water. If the water is continuously pumped, there are more chances of supplying dirty water, the source added.

“There have to be breaks in pumping to allow the dirt to settle down,” the source explained.

The acting public relations officer, Ruth Ijang, said: “The drought is a very big problem, but we shall maintain the flow of water to our clients. The pressure is not enough to pump the water.”

However, the water supply manager, Ssonko Kiwanuka, said: “We recently increased the production capacity. The drought has nothing to do with this.”

He said the shortage was being caused by the increased number of consumers.
