What is public about these universities?

EDITOR—On August 14, the New Vision published an article where MPs call the fees increment in public universities obscene. I can’t agree with them more! How else could they term it? But my question is, do we have any public universities in Uganda?

The dictionary definition of the word public is: “of, concerning or open to the people as a whole,…….. of or provided by the state rather than an independent, commercial company”.

In our current setting of obscene discrimination against the poor but deserving students, these so- called public universities cannot be open and accessible to all! Looking at the fees, the definitions above automatically qualify these universities as private.

The state should simply officially privatise the so-called public universities and stop fooling us.
