AFTER a couple of casting sessions across the country, only 10 girls made it to this year’s Miss Uganda grand finale. These will be joined by Miss Uganda UK 2009 winner, Maria Namiiro, making eleven finalists in the contest slated for September 25, 2009 at the Imperial Royale Hotel. Gilbert Mwijuke profiles each of the final contestants.

Tina Atim, 20
“I am in this competition because I know I have what it takes to win,” the girl from Soroti says with utmost confidence. Her motto is: “Always work for the future.” If she wins the title, she will join the fight against cross-generational sex. She is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in adult and community education. Reading is her favourite pastime.

Brenda Ibara, 22
A student of literature and drama at Makerere University, Ibara describes herself as “very adventurous and daring”. This Bushenyi native says she is in the contest because she believes she can represent Uganda in the Miss World contest.

Her motto is: “Never take life too seriously”. “Sometimes you should lie back and relax,” she says. In future, Ibara hopes to be a professional model and writer.

Maria Namiiro, 21
Her childhood dream was to win any beauty pageant. This dream came true when she was crowned Miss Uganda UK early this year. The win gave her automatic entry into the Miss Uganda 2009 pageant.

Her motto is: “In life never fail to try.” That is why, even though she never expected to win the Miss Uganda UK pageant, Namiiro still gave it a try. And if luck strikes again and she wins the Miss Uganda crown, Namiiro looks forward to helping Uganda’s destitute.

Beatrice Asio, 23
This freelance model is in this competition because she wants to bring out “that inside of me that people cannot see.” Asio says she is soft-hearted and if she is crowned Miss Uganda 2009, she intends to help the needy.

Stella Atal is her favourite local designer and she is also fascinated by singer Beyonce’s style. The Senior Five student has interests in reading novels and magazines and watching documentaries.

Lola Naggayi, 22
Her approach to life is “never give up.” Even though she has no prior experience in modelling, the Mukono girl considers herself a serious contender for the title. And if she is crowned Miss Uganda, she intends to use her position to help the needy. Dancing, watching movies, singing and acting are some of her hobbies.

Joan Atieno, 18
She describes herself as “stubborn, funny, humble and can sometimes be quiet.” At 18, this Gulu-born beauty is the youngest girl in the race for this year’s Miss Uganda crown. She is a student of art and design. Her favourite designer is Sylvia Owori. Atieno mentions travelling, modelling and swimming as her hobbies.

Mable Mwagale, 20
This is the first time she is taking part in a beauty pageant. Her self-confidence and contagious smile make her a serious contender. A BSc Business Statistics student, she loves dancing watching movies, singing and acting.

Caroline Nantumbwe, 23
Her strong point is her infectious smile. And her self-confidence is another factor that propelled her to the finals. As a student of business administration, Nantumbwe says she will advise Ugandans on how to survive the pangs of the current global financial turmoil if she is crowned Miss Uganda 2009. She likes modelling, travelling and reading novels.

Mary Kirabo, 21
At 5ft 11”, Kirabo is the tallest contestant. This beauty says making it to the finals of Miss Uganda is a fulfilment of a childhood dream. If crowned Miss Uganda 2009, she wants to promote Ugandan culture abroad. The full-time mass communication student describes herself as friendly and humble.

Agnes Atim, 23
She is inspired by local designers Sylvia Owori and Santa Anzo. A student of French, Atim likes swimming and travelling. She also looks forward to helping the needy if she wins.

Grace Kiwanuka, 23She joined the pageant because, in her words, “Miss Uganda” is written all over her. Describing herself as someone with a “golden heart”, Kiwanuka says if she wins — which she is certain of — she will help the needy people in northern Uganda. “I think the region has the biggest percentage of needy people,” she says.
