They drive into the school compound, pay their fees and dash out at the speed of lightning. Without shame, some of them ring later to find out information they should have received at no cost if only they had spared a minute. Are parents that busy on the opening days? Yes, the opening day can be hectic with too much to accomplish but there are some essentials that you should not forget.

It might appear like it is only school fees on the agenda but there is more to be accomplished. Let us explore what is involved in your child’s opening day.

- Read the circulars and take note of the details. Most schools use circulars as the main mode of communication through which parents get an updates of the on-goings in the school.

- Take time and study the circular issued. Is there anything that might affect your financial decisions like fees increase?

- How about a list of books and items required by the school? How about educational trips or end of year party? Feel free to seek clarification from the school authorities.

- Third term is a critical term in which children sit for promotional exams. Talk to your child’s class teacher and find out how you can be involved in your child’s educational challenges this term.

- Draw the teachers’ attention to your child’s weakness and find out what they think might hinder your child’s promotion to the next class.

- Find out the school’s visiting days and what is involved. Some schools have academic and social visiting days while others only have one visiting day.

- In case your child is in a candidate class find out when the national exams will begin and how early you should pick the child.

- If the child is in a boarding, talk to the school matron, nurse or anybody who takes care of them. Thank them for their work and find out if there is anything that needs your attention.

- Paying attention to the details of school matters shows your child that you take their education seriously.

- Your child can easily take advantage of your ignorance if you do not pay attention to detail.

- Remember, one of the secrets of effective parenting is developing a keen eye for detail and an ear that listens to the heart, not just the words.

Have a pleasant term.
