THE MP for Ndorwa East in Kabale district, Wilfred Niwagaba, has expressed concern at the way rich people are utilising every available land to plant pine trees, saying it was likely to bring about famine and poverty to the people.

Niwagaba was on Thursday speaking at a fund-raising function for the construction of the new Kacuuro Catholic Church in Kyanamira sub-county.

He said forest experts had warned him that Pine trees being planted everywhere were harmful to the soil and environment and advocated for planting indigenous trees instead.

He also supported the growing of temperate trees such as apples, pears, grapes, and avocados, saying they provide food, improve people’s incomes and protect the environment.

During the function, over sh8m was raised. Niwagaba and Rubanda West MP Henry Banyenzaki, jointly contributed sh3m for the roofing of the church.
