ENERGY minister, Hilary Onek has offered 200 acres of land to the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) for an industrial park in Kitgum. This follows the reluctance of Gulu district to offer land to UIA for its regional industrial development initiative.

“If Gulu does not want to give Uganda Investment Authority land, then I will give them (UIA) 200 acres of land in Kitgum. “Lira has already given them land. We must bring industries closer here because we have the markets,” the minister said.

“The Government has a programme to spread industrial development in the country. “UIA has already requested Gulu district administration to provide land for that purpose here in northern Uganda,” he said.

“I urge leaders to give land for industries to create jobs for our youth, boost business for other local entrepreneurs, develop Gulu into a vibrant city and a regional export hub,” Onek explained.

The minister disclosed that he was working to extend electricity to Lamwo district to facilitate the establishment of a cement factory and gold mining. He told Gulu leaders last week that other than Lamwo district, President Yoweri Museveni had directed his ministry to embark on an aggressive rural electrification programme.

Power extension in Acholi’s sub-region major towns, he stated, would include Corner Kilak-Pader-Lira Palwo-Patongo-Kalongo and Abim.

Some projects, Onek added, were already ongoing and should be ready for commissioning soon. Under the initiative, the minister said, all the major towns across the country would be served with power.

“This will help us mine the minerals that we have in various parts of the country,” Onek said. He said the economy was gaining ground, moving from the export of raw materials to manufacturing and export of finished goods.

Onek said the recent surveys indicated the presence of mineral wealth deposits across Uganda, including the new Lamwo district.
