EDITOR—I have been a proud parent at St Mary’s Kitende, However, on October 17, my pride was shattered when I witnessed the most shocking and bizarre behaviour and failure to observe simple etiquette and hygiene by both students and parents who I expected to know better.

They could not observe simple behaviour like queuing up while entering the school gates. They even threw insults at the gate-keepers in the presence of the students. Ugandans can be impatient and abusive!

The school premises were turned into a semi-dumping area, littered with all stuff one can imagine—empty bottles of mineral water, disposable cups, and different kinds of buveera and empty boxes of expired biscuits and Safi juice. Despite its good academic performance, Kitende should strive to educate her students on simple hygiene.

Being a responsible person and an ‘academician’ is much more than obtaining the best grades. They should demonstrate this in action. A teacher I spoke to at the school seemed to be surprised by my observation and reluctantly showed me some dustbins around the school.

As for the parents, I am ashamed by their irresponsibility! A smartly dressed and beautiful lady suddenly turned ugly when she unbelievably hurled a huge empty plastic bottle of Coca-Cola right in the walkway!
