LACK of proper planning and focus has continued to create untold suffering and increased the rate of corruption, illiteracy and poverty in Uganda. As Uganda recently celebrated its 47th anniversary of independence, we need to reflect backwards before 1962.
Tribalism, sectarianism, nepotism, corruption, and intrigue were non-existent. Why is it that 47 years down the road we are still divided along tribal lines?
There is a high rate of unemployment, illiteracy and an imbalance in wealth distribution. Lack of focus has led to increased idleness that has led to riots, insecurity, HIV/AIDS and unemployment. As Uganda nears 50 years of independence, we need to reflect on the aspects that will make Uganda a better place.
Environmental conservation, massive tree planting and a reduction on industrial pollution should be the point of focus. Education should be emphasised to promote literacy levels. Government needs to do much in the infrastructural sectors to ease the transportation of goods in the country.
How can this be achieved? A combined effort of religious leaders, teachers, professionals, politicians and technocrats is needed to change the current attitude of the people.
The NGOs that spend over 80% of their budgets on seminars and luxurious workshops in posh hotels should consider shifting these huge amounts of money into developments that benefit the rural poor. Small deeds done are better than the great deeds planned.
