SEVERAL Democratic Party (DP) leaders have endorsed Samuel Lubega as the party’s flag-bearer in the 2011 presidential elections, reports Moses Mulondo.

“I have analysed the three contestants and I believe Lubega is the best person to be the leader of the party because not only does he stand for our values of truth and democracy, he has also demonstrated outstanding love for the party,” said party chairperson Joseph Mukiibi.

He made the remarks on Tuesday during a DP stakeholders’ summit at Pope Paul Memorial Centre in Kampala.

“People, whose acts contradict our values, want to take leadership,” Mukiibi said.

The other leaders, who expressed their support, included the party vice-president, Reinar Kafiire, acting secretary general Lulume Bayiga, woman leader Ikiria Ssepuuya, deputy organising chairperson John Tusiime, deputy legal advisor Peter Ssebyuma and former party vice-president Tiberio Okeny.

The party will elect new leaders next month during the delegates’ conference.

Norbert Mao and Kampala mayor Nasser Sebaggala are also campaigning for the party presidency.

Lubega, who has been the DP chairperson in the UK, said he had been sent by party members in the diaspora as their ambassador to lead the party.

“Opportunistic politicians have disappointed Ugandans for so long. I have come under the umbrella of the change Ugandans can trust based on the foundation of our glorious values of truth and justice,” he said.
