WHO said being models disqualifies them from making good moms? Well, Rachael Wanyana Yiga, a former Miss Uganda contestant, is here to challenge that adage. A mother of three, Wanyana shares information on safe pregnancy, childbirth and having a blissful relationship with your kids.

This is all wrapped in her magazine, My Baby, which will be launched in Serena Hotel’s Victoria Hall on December 4. The launch will be followed by a fun packed babies’ day out with parents at Centenary Park on December 6.

In 2003, Wanyana’s desire to create a baby’s magazine was born. “I thought of an upmarket baby magazine that was also interesting,” says Wanyana
First-time mothers often panic during pregnancy because they are unaware of what to do.

They run from one doctor to another even over simple issues.
“When I was expecting my first child, I looked for something to read that could help me, but all I got were books and magazines from the US and Europe.

They had good material, but they were not very relevant to African women,” she says.

Because of her experience and knowledge, Wanyana’s friends kept seeking her advice on motherhood. It thus occurred to her that this was a community need

“This magazine offers information on early child development, baby health products and maternal health — antenatal and pre-maternal,” she says.

“It features information from doctors and children specialists, real life motherhood experiences; answering many questions on breast milk and immunisation”.

Wanyana says the magazine provides tips on trends among tots, and nursery essentials and fathers’ roles in their children’s lives.
