REGIONAL governments have been advised to fight corruption and poverty and invest in skills development to increase employment opportunities.

South Africa’s deputy Minister of Public Works, Bogapane Zulu Hendrietta, called for employment that upholds the dignity of Africans.

“We should work hard to leave a legacy. The dignity of a human heart is to work for a cause. We should ensure that corruption does not exceed expectations of our people,” she told participants at the opening of the 13th regional seminar for labour-based practitioners at Speke Resort, Munyonyo yesterday.

Bogapane called for the proper regulation of contractors to ensure that the construction industry does not become a haven for the get-rich-quick.

Durban in South Africa hosted the 12th edition of the seminar. Bogapane is to hand over the mantle to works and housing minister Eng. John Nasasira.
Bogapane said President Jacob Zuma had directed her ministry to create one million jobs before the end of the year and 4.5 million jobs by 2014.

Nasasira said the forum would discuss how to increase employment opportunities in the construction sector.
Terje Tessem, an official of of the International Labour Organisation, said the way out of poverty is through decent jobs.
