Makerere missed a great chance

I thank former student and ex-president of Tanzania Benjamin Mkapa for attending. It is unfortunate there was no effort by Makerere to reach out to its international and rich alumni here in Europe, Asia and America.

With the globalised world and stiff world university competition, Makerere needs to break new ground in terms of communication channels in order to involve as many people as possible.

There is need to involve more people in the university’s public affairs and their intellectual interest, provide online researched information, appeal to donors and move away from the local to globalised ivory tower.

Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, the new cyber-ambitious chancellor should turn the social dimension of interactive internet applications to Makerere’s advantage.

Makerere should even appear on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook and there should be video clips on U-tube about its innovations. With this, Makerere will definitely live up to its motto of building for the future.
