IVAN Byekwaso beat a strong field of 66 East African body builders to emerge champion of the World Aids Day championships in Kericho, Kenya.

IVAN Byekwaso beat a strong field of 66 East African body builders to emerge champion of the World Aids Day championships in Kericho, Kenya.

The 29-year-old middle-weight consequently became the first Ugandan to win an overall crown at the East African level. He won sh0.7m

He was among 33 finalists who competed in six weight categories at the fourth edition of the championship, beating seasoned Kenyan body builder and reigning Mr. Kenya, Mesach Ochieng to second place.

His other Kenyan victims included Chris Omedo, Mr. Nairobi Anthony Kasuku and seven year Kenya middle weight champion Kassim Kasidi.

Byekwaso competed alongside five other Ugandans who included Mubarak Kizito (bantam), Edward Mugerwa (middle), Ronnie Lukonge (light heavy), Ronald Mutebi (bantam) and Kenneth Ssekiranda (heavy).

The seven-man Ugandan team led by local bodybuilding governing body organising secretary Fred Munyagwa had Kizito being voted the best poser on top of winning silver in the bantamweight category.

The team was sponsored by Hotel Africana.
