A senior mortuary attendant (anatomical pathology technician) at Mulago Hospital dived from the 6th floor of Ward 6B yesterday morning and died instantly.

Peter Agio, a resident of Ttula-Kawempe, had been nicknamed “Last card” by fellow workers for being the longest serving mortuary attendant at the hospital.

“He was always the last person to inspect a dead body,” one worker said.
Workers and patients on Ward 1B said they heard a loud bang at about 7:30am as Agio’s body hit the ground.

The area, described as a death spot, has seen over five people dive to their death. They include a pregnant woman who died at the same spot last week.
The officer in charge of Mulago Casualty Police Post, Sgt. Omoit, said they were investigating the circumstances and the background to the incident.

“We all knew this man as a hard-working fellow who has served here for over 30 years. We shall investigate the matter,” he said.
Moments later, one of Agio’s daughters, Mary Adoko, fainted in shock. She was lifted away by relatives and hospital workers to the casualty unit, where she was admitted.

Another daughter, only identified as Aden, also collapsed on seeing the smashed body of her father and was also taken for treatment as more friends and relatives jammed the place.
Agio left behind three wives and scores of children.

Family members said Agio left home in the morning without any complaint. Just last week, he had held a party for his daughter, Aden, who graduated with a Diploma in Catering last week.

But a fellow worker said Agio looked disturbed the day before and only said he had problems when pressed to explain. “He arrived for duty on a bodaboda and walked around greeting friends and later he went to see a patient in Ward 3B,” the hospital cleaner said.

“I was sweeping around this spot when something fell behind me and on turning, I saw Agio’s body,” said Fulugensio Lukyamuzi, another cleaner.
