The state minister for health, Dr. Richard Nduhura, has warned the people of Bushenyi district against restoring Ankole kingdom, saying there is nothing to benefit from it.
Nduhura, also the Igara East Member of Parliament, said the restoration of the kingdom would derail the development of the region.
He said the issue of hereditary leadership does not benefit the people.
Nduhura explained that it would divert the people from development programmes.
He argued that there were other issues that people needed to concentrate on, rather than indulging in the non-developmental ones.
He was speaking to Christians at Christ the King Catholic Church in Bushenyi town during a fundraising drive to complete the construction of the church on Sunday.
On Friday, the district councils of Mbarara and Bushenyi declined to endorse the restoration of Ankole Kingdom, saying it was a sensitive matter that required consultation with the people.
The councils discussed the issue following a request from the Bunyoro King, Solomon Gafabusa Iguru, the head of the forum of traditional leaders in Uganda.
The forum wants the Ankole kingdom restored.
Nduhura said it was not in order for Prince John Barigye to call for a consultation meeting with the district councillors without involving the MPs since they had a stake in the issue.
Nduhura said the Government is aware that there is a country financing kings in Uganda without their approval.
“I am in government and I know there is one country giving money to cultural leaders and monarchies. People of Bushenyi had agreed earlier that they do not want a monarchy. If restored, it will divide us and cause havoc,†Nduhura warned.
Last week, Prince Barigye, the heir to the Ankole kingdom throne, allegedly held a meeting with district councillors from Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Ibanda, Isingiro and Kiruhura, at his home in Mbarara and lobbied them to pass a resolution to restore the kingdom.
