THE government has been urged to increase funding to the Universal Primary Education (UPE) programme. The call was made by residents of Angetta parish in Lira district.

Citing Obuo Primary School, they said the school had an enrollment of 700 pupils but received only sh400,000 every term from the Government. This means that only sh571 is provided for each pupil.

“Roads to some schools are cut off, which affects the enrollment,” Sam Obua, the Angetta sub-county councillor, told northern youth MP Denis Hamson Obua on Saturday.

MP Obua was launching the Angetta Community Monitors, an organisation initiated by the residents in an attempt to improve the education standard in the area.

Sam Obua said increasing the UPE budget would revitalise the standard of education in the area, which declined during the 20-year Lord’s Resistance Army insecurity.

The MP said the problems surrounding UPE had already been brought to the attention of the education minister, Namirembe Bitamazire.
