THE outstanding performance and the top badminton ranking of the boys on the continent will fetch Uganda more technical support from international bodies.
The observation was made by national badminton chief executive officer Simon Mugabi while addressing the press.
The boys from St Margaret’s School Makerere went top of the Africa rankings after beating Mauritius in the final of the inaugural All Africa Schools Badminton Championships that concluded over the weekend in Mauritius. The team returned Tuesday.
Mugabi was addressing the press after the team returned home with gold for the boys and silver for the girls. He was impressed by their input, saying that it was the fruits of the talent identification programmes that the association has been carrying out and following on for the past years.
“It has been a long process and it is good that we are recognised. We were playing against teams that have better training facilities and more funds. We managed to finish in respectable positions. We will have a basis to ask for aid next time,†said Mugabi.
The girl’s team from Mariam High settled for a silver medal after losing to Nigeria.
“We would have won both gold medals if our girls had had enough exposure. We promise to even do better in the next edition,†Mugabi vowed.
