Why did Okello have to walk to Khartoum?

EDITOR—I am a Sudanese American who is a regular New Vision reader. I find the story of the Ugandan who left Uganda in 1962 and returned home after 47 years interesting.

But I wish to observe two points. The 4,000 pounds the reporter says Paul Okello paid in 1962 as security to get a visa to Europe does not make sense. Even today that is a reasonably big amount of money.
If Okello had so much money why didn’t he fly from Kampala to Cairo or Europe? Secondly, there was no railway line between Khartoum and Cairo in the 60s nor is it there today!
