EDITOR—Makerere University faces the challenge of finding a suitable vice chancellor after Prof Livingstone Luboobi.

There is no doubt that the post requires a man or woman of many gifts and good knowledge and experience of university life. Whoever is finally appointed faces a gargantuan task all round. Whatever his or her distinguished capabilities, he or she will need to work with a strong team.

A VC does a lot in the university in terms of providing leadership and raising its profile. However, there are other significant persons that have not been mentioned in the talk about a new VC. They include the University Registrar and Pro-Vice Chancellors.

This person assists a lot in the administration of the university and in the formulation of its policies. And while attention has been drawn to intra-university culture and issues such as academic standards or quality control, there is also need for the university to strengthen or improve the relationship of the campus to surrounding communities.
In recent times, Makerere students have not been known to be particularly good neighbours.

The new VC will need to create or work with a task force that is capable of delivering the goods.

The new VC might also consider operationalising contact with the university’s alumni. It is not an easy task, but it is desirable; for the prosperity of most universities depend very much on the goodwill and funding support from its alumni.
