MUSLIM sheikhs in Kamuli and Kaliro have vowed not to recognise Sheikh Zubairi Kayongo, the head of a plinter group, as a Mufti.

In a meeting chaired by the Kamuli district Khadi, Sheikh Ibrahim Muganza, at the Supreme Council Hall yesterday, Mubajje’s supporters described Kayongo as the Imam of the Kibuli mosque.

The meeting was convened to take a stand on the current top leadership crisis.

The motion was moved by Kaliro district Khadhi, Sheikh Eriasa Muvuma, who said Kayongo was a confusing agent, who was backed by a handful of misfits, whose main mission is to tear apart and destabilise the faith.

“Mubajje has done much for the Muslims. We shall not pay allegiance to the Imam of the Kibuli mosque,” Muvuma said.

Muganza said Kayongo was elected illegally.

“When electing a Mufti, delegates from every district converge at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, but Kayongo was elected by a cross-section of worthless followers in and around Kampala,” he said.

The Muslims blamed the Kamuli district delegate, Muhammad Kisambira, for joining the rebel faction and vowed to discipline him.

“He mobilises people saying Mubajje is a thief. We shall tip the Police and have him arrested,” Muganza said.

In attendance were Kamuli Muslim Supreme Council Chairman, Siraje Mugoya and county imams.
