A mobile phone belonging to the late renowned actor, Winkle Rutamirika, was used to make calls shortly after his murder, court heard on Wednesday.

Rutamirika’s wife, Christine Karitundu and a family friend, Christiano Bulira, are on trial over the murder that took place on March 15, 2008. The third suspect is on the run.

Rutamirika, who was returning home with his wife shortly after midnight, was bludgeoned to death outside their house.

Court presided over by Justice Eldad Mwangusya, also heard that the widow’s two phones were also used to call Bulira before and after Rutamirika was murdered.
Phone printouts from Celtel and MTN were presented before court by Police detective Tom Murangi.

“On the day he was murdered, Rutamirika had not communicated using his phone, but communication was made after he was dead. This was at around 2:47am,” Murangi said.

He said on the day of the incident, the widow also called someone she only identified as Richard, a friend she said who operates between Uganda and Burundi.

Murangi also testified that Karitundu communicated to Bulira at around 12:22am, shortly before Rutamirika’s murder, adding that she again called the same number at around 1:40am when Rutamirika was dead. The number was called again at 1:52am and at 2:02am.

Earlier, the assistant Inspector General of Police, Julius Shalita, testified that at first there was no indication that the widow and the friend could have been connected with the attack.

He said after Rutamirika was buried, he received a call from an informant claiming to have a piece of wood that was cut from the club used to clobber Rutamirika. The piece of wood was exhibited in court and the case adjourned to March 17.
