UMEME has instructed Kampala Associated Advocates to prosecute electricity thieves and defaulters as part of its overall programmes to reduce losses in power consumption.
Peter Kabatsi and Dr Kallu Kalumiya, both senior partners in the law firm, KAA, told Saturday Vision that they have already met with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Richard Buteera, who sanctioned their private prosecutions of the culprits.
In criminal prosecutions, it is the DPP, who must grant permission to private prosecutions. According to the lawyers, their private prosecutions would cover all the major towns in Uganda.
“And in this case, the DPP endorsed the UMEME/KAA proposed approach for the private prosecutions and our firm’s involvement in the carrying out of the project without reference to his office, save for keeping him informed of the progress being made,†the lawyers said.
KAA is one of the prominent law firms in the country with regional and international links.
