YUMBE district’s Daniel Yeko will be man to watch at the 2nd edition of the Arop Memorial meet due to be held in Gulu tomorrow.

Yeko who threw 61.40m, 0.20m off national holder Patrick Kibwota’s mark at a regional event last year, has missed a number of competitions due to lack of transport to competition venues.

However, having a competition in the neighbourhood will enable him turn up this time round.

The event is held in memory of Uganda’s most celebrated javelin thrower Justin Arop, who once held an African record.

Arop’s mark of 76.94m during the 1978 All Africa Games in Algiers still stands as the national record.

The Gulu event which will have track action in only 100m, 800m and 5000m, is mainly for fielders.

“The competition is part of our plan to tap talent in field events in the region,” Uganda Athletics Federation official Namayo Mawerere said.

At the same time, Uganda Athletics Federation might be the biggest beneficiary if Uganda’s request to China to avail Namboole stadium with an electronic timer succeeds.

The absence of an electronic timer has had an impact on Uganda sprinters since they can not qualify for international events without it.
